Pray, pray, pray because human existence has changed now, possibly forever. Try to savor the simple things we've become accustomed to, things like abundant and cheap food, transportation, medicine and peace. They're all going to become distant memories, the sort of things that people will hear about in stories and wonder if it could have ever been true. A thousand years from now this blowout will be remembered as a pivotal event in history, something akin to the fall of Rome or the Plague; maybe the beginning of the second dark age.

"The Obama Administration and senior BP officials are frantically working not to stop the world's worst oil disaster, but to hide the true extent of the actual ecological catastrophe. Senior researchers tell us that the BP drilling hit one of the oil migration channels and that the leakage could continue for years unless decisive steps are undertaken, something that seems far from the present strategy.

Ghawar, the world's most prolific oilfield has been producing millions of barrels daily for almost 70 years with no end in sight. According to the abiotic science, Ghawar like all elephant and giant oil and gas deposits all over the world, is located on a migration channel similar to that in the oil-rich Gulf of Mexico."

ReplyDeleteThe oil geyser in the Gulf of Mexico is indeed a monumental environmental crisis whose economic reprecussions we have yet to experience. However, the abiogenic origin of petroleum is a theory in dispute:

I am not conversant enough in chemistry to state an opinion one way or the other, but most scientists favor the theory of the biomass origin of petroleum.
Interestingly enough, the ONLY proponents of the theory of the abiogenic origin have been Soviet and ex-Soviet scientists, and their blood enemies, Protestant Fundamentalist Evangelicals who adhere to the view that Earth (and the entire Universe at large) has a very short history - some 6000 years.
The theory of the abiogenic origin of oil over the theory of the biomass origin of oil makes the Fundamentalist contention of a very short history teneable. For biomass decay to result in the formation of oil takes tens if not hundreds of millions of years, and that would invalidate so-called "Creationism science".
However, whatever the case may be, what you point out is correct - we are in deep trouble by our own making. Perhaps this is how the prophecies in Revelation on the deaths of vast numbers of sea creatures, and the poisoning of rivers, lakes and oceans are fulfilled.
I agree with your comments about the competing theories of the origins of oil. I've got a customer that made his living an as engineer in the oil fields of Saudi Arabia. We've never spoken about abiogenic oil but we've spoken extensively about the amount of oil in known reserves. The numbers are staggering. And a lot of it is relatively easy to get to.
ReplyDeleteAbiogenic oil may or may not be the truth. Perhaps oil is the result of biomass, though I've read some convincing arguments against it. Regardless, whatever created the dome of oil we've tapped into, there is one hell of a lot of it and we don't have the technology to stop it before the damage done is historic and history changing.
